I would really recommend making weapons and armor for your followers. Once I got smithing up a little to make weapons for my follower, my werewolf tree perked up and a handful of nice staves I was good on damage. Also, sometimes followers do stupid AI related stuff and you just have to do whatever yourself. There are some instances where you're going to have to provide some damage but you seem to understand that since you're including one-handed. It'll be a little rough in the beginning, depending on the difficulty level you play at, before you get whatever combat talent up that you're using for off dps. My party consists of Vilkas, Meeko and sometimes whatever comes out of the summoning staff I'm carrying. All of my builds are for level 55 or less (the old soft cap and since most of the game happens in between those levels).
If you're curious, this is my planned build. He also carries the Ring of Hircine, so he can transform into a werewolf when healing and diplomacy fails. The most aggressive thing he does is cast Fury, at least in human form.
He's a gentle priest who won't use offensive magic or blades.
The concept is to create a character with some duality to his nature. Been wanting to for.years now, just never did it. I'm currently leveling a healer in Skyrim.
